INSIGHTS Talks: Ways of depathologizing university spaces: Reflections from staff Online
In this workshop we explore how disability in university settings is a systemic inequality that requires structural change to address. To make learning accessible for all, we will explore the importance of no longer talking about disability in line with the deficit medical model, but instead through the social / affirmative model. QMU colleagues will offer short reflections on the changes they have made to depathologize university spaces.
Reflections will centre on supporting neurodivergent students and co-creating content/framing of autism/social communication modules with students; on PALS work with around universal design for learning, and on consulting and creating a safe and inclusive learning environment with the students.
Facilitator: Vikki Hill, Interim Director of LEAD
Speakers: Lynne Bremner, Lecturer - Speech and Hearing Sciences
Lisa Vettese-Cruden, Peer Assisted Learning Coordinator - Admissions, RILO & Outreach
Dr Sian Jones, Senior Lecturer - Psychology, Sociology & Education
Dr Siobhan Mack, Senior Lecturer - Speech and Hearing Sciences
This workshop builds on research by Dr Sian Jones who will share her resources in the session. We invite all QMU campus, online and partner staff and welcome students to join us too. We will have space for questions and discussion.
