Anti-Racism in Education. Bianca Mastrominico - White is the colour of my name: anti-racism in theatre and performance praxis In-Person / Online

Please join us as our current and past QMU colleagues discuss their chapter contributions to Anti-Racism in Education: Stories of Growing Activism, https://www.criticalpublishing.com/anti-racism-in-education edited by Dr Geetha Marcus and Dr Stefanie Van de Peer. The events will explore the stories of how scholars, researchers and teachers at QMU became part of anti-racist teaching activism through their own growing understanding of racism in education.

In each session, we will have space for questions and discussion and hope to provide a space for learning and sahring of practice. We ask that you commit to these principles explained by Building the Anti-Racist Classroom.

In this session, we welcome Bianca Mastrominico, who will present her chapter White is the colour of my name: anti-racism in theatre and performance praxis (Chapter 10).  The session will offer an insight into current anti-racist praxis within the academic and professional field of theatre and performance, with a focus on anti-racism as a critical compass for intersectional, diverse and inclusive creative practice. The presentation will involve a mini-installation of non-Western objects and cultural artefacts, visual material and dance demonstrations, all interspersed with selected readings from my book chapter.

If anyone who intends to participate would like/could read Bianca's chapter and browse the reflective questions as well as recommended reading below, we can discuss together during the Q&A.

Reflective questions:

  • How can performance be a tool for investigating internalised racism?
  • How can individual stories of racial oppressions be shared through creative means?
  • How can creative practice and embodiment challenge the racial discourse?

You can access both physical and digital copies of Anti-Racism in Education: Stories of Growing Activism through QMU Library.
